How to install cleats on road bike shoes
How do you put cleats on road bike shoes? How to fit and adjust cleats in six steps Mark the position across the ball of your foot. Pop your shoes on. Draw between the points and find the midpoint. Take your shoes off and flip them over. Locate the centre of your cleat. Take a look at your new cleats. Grease the bolts. Tighten up. Laterally, the front tip of the cleat should follow the line of your middle toe. These are good starting points for basic cleat positioning on a new shoe.
The Peloton Bike uses Delta-compatible cleats, which you can affix to the bottom of our Peloton shoes or any pair of bike shoes with a 3-screw hole setup. We encourage you to use the pedals your Bike comes with for an optimal ride. Tighten the cleats into place. This step is also far easier with the assistance of a helper. Firstly, you want to verify that your cleat position centres the ball of each foot over the respective pedal axle. Again, this is vastly easier with a helper who can verify this step for you.
The next step is to pedal and verify that the angle of the cleat is correct. Can you feel any tension in the knee or hip?
If so, are you riding against the edge of the pedal float range? As a reminder you want your foot to naturally sit in the middle of the pedal float range.
The pressure in your feet should feel even left to right. Sometimes stance width, foot tilt, too much float or too little float, left-to-right stack heights, and many other factors need to be accounted for when correctly setting cleat positions. Grab yourself a white paint marker or correction pen and simply trace around the key curves of the old cleat. Let the paint dry. Getting your cleat placement right is important to avoid strain and injury.

Step one: Assessing your natural foot position Your goal with cleat fitting is to allow your feet to sit within their natural position.
How do your feet sit? The first and fifth metatarsals are your guide points. With your shoes on you want to feel for the body protrusions of the feet.
Place some tape over these protrusions. Now use a marker to mark the centre of these protrusions. Fully marked off.
When done you should have a dot or line on both sides of both shoes. Note your marking. Repeat the step for the other shoe. Hold a ruler against the mark and trace the line straight down to the same point on the sole of the shoe. Step five: Align the mark on the point of the cleat where the center of the pedal axle will be located once you have clipped in. Both SPD and LDP cleats usually have a marker on the side to make it easier for you to align your mark with the center of the pedal axle.
If the fit is correctly aligned, you can tighten the bolts into the shoe to affix your cleat securely. There you have it: an easy guide on how to install cleats on indoor cycling shoes.
