Slow file transfer windows 7 gigabit

If you've not got a gig connection on both devices, fixing that is probably the best place to start. I had very slow transfers from my WHS box to my Windows 7 desktop. I enabled jumbo frames on my server, realtek nic, and had to use the netsh command to set my MTU on my desktop. Nvidia nics do not have an option to enable jumbo frames.

What used to be 36 hour restores transmitting at 3. The laptop hard drive may be the factor that is limiting your transmit speed. Make sure the jumbo frames are set to 7k and that the gigabit switch in the middle supports jumbo frames because all do not.

It took me a few days to find a low cost gigabit switch that supported jumbo frames. Try turning off receive side scaling and autotuning. I had the same issue, but failed to document what exactly I did to fix it other then try a google search of the same stuff. I know I ended up applying a bunch of commands in netsh. Hope it will solve your problem, it solved mine.

I share the same issue with my gigabit network and I have tried the same things as you CathuluDragon. I don't intend to hijack your thread here because I have the same questions and I don't see any sense in having redundant threads. What's worse, I get better transfer rates over USB 2. Best I can do with my gigabit network to my NAS which is a gigabit device, also is 8. Turning on jumbo frames to 7k seems to work best for my setup. From where the internet? WHAT is your connection speed to the internet??

Wireless G can handle most internet speeds.. To the original poster, it's pretty obvious that you just have a slow back-end. If you want to see better speeds, you're going to need better than 54g, and mb in switch form or not.

There is really nothing else that needs to be said. Windows is only as fast as the hardware it runs on, or connects through. Search In. Share More sharing options Followers 0. What speed do you think you should get wireless? Especially when there are 2 clients wireless. HelgenX Posted August 8, Posted August 8, Lazure Posted August 8, Posted August 8, edited. My wifes laptop w7 to my 2k8 server [] local I am using all 3 mech: So your saying it can not go over 55, or your saying its slow from a stop light?

My windows 7 machine [] local Speed : To break it down again: If you're running a G network and all clients are connected as G, your client might report a connect rate of 54Mbps but realistically only expect a Mbps transfer rate capacity for all clients to share. Yeah nullie but what if your connecting at ALL 3 speeds at that same time  So you should be able to add them up right? But then again I thought this was pretty clear "What speed do you think you should get wireless?

W10 Posted August 9, Posted August 9, Posted August 9, edited. Nagisan Posted August 9, W10 Posted August 10, Posted August 10, It depends on if the hardware at the other end of the cable supports it and if it was on auto neg then Im guessing it negotiated mb for a reason ; P. Again as to 12MBps You sure you didn't round that off a bit? Now if that was mbit network then yeah thats pretty freaking slow ; But lets get to your Wireless Speeds! I'm not complaining, i'm in doubt. Posted August 10, edited.

Same goes for seeing what speed your nic is connected at - just move your mouse over the icon in your tray if you have it set to show the icon for your wired interface when connected - if not just double click the interface Edited August 10, by BudMan.

Why are cables a common problem? It does not appear to be anything that requires a lot of complex work to get right - 8 wires on each end. I will order cables today and see how it impacts performance.

Is there a network tool you suggest a I use to test speeds before and after other than a windows file transfer? MerlinRML said:. DisgruntledVirus said:. Jul 14, 1, 6 Binky Diamond Member. Oct 9, 4, 4 Cables Cables Cables A bad cable will still connect at GB speeds the light goes on , but it will work just as poorly as described above. Did you follow the A or B wiring standard? If it is a solid core cable, it should not have ends crimped on, it is meant to be terminated to a keystone.

The crimp ends are different for a Solid core b stranded. They are further different for a cat5 e , b Cat6, c Cat 6a etc. The wire gauges different. So nothing personal.

Im a bit skeptical about the cable being the issue, in my experience they work or dont work reliably if the network cards dont renegotiate a lower speed or lose connection randomly, then I think its something else.

Of course it doesnt hurt ruling this out especially as network cables are cheap. YOuve tested harddrive performance, but as others implied, you may want to test filesystem performance. Just copy a huge file or set of files to a different folder and see if you get normal performance. Try it on both machines. Also have you tried updating your NIC drivers? Do you have another NIC you can test with? Or a third machine laptop? I have seen similar issues with some onboard gigabit controllers.

Lat suggestion: what inbetween these machines? A router or switch or is it a cross cable? If its a router, make sure there isnt something wrong with that, like a crappy firewall.

P4man said:. This is the other problem I am investigating, I have to check the cache setting in the bios on the card. It hosts some web traffic and does a few other small tasks, but is primarily a mass storage server.

The 35 GB file is being copied on to the server, but even then it should theoretically stay at 16 Mbps You must log in or register to reply here.
